Clarke to miss India tour, Marsh recalled

October 09, 2009

Injured Michael Clarke was ruled out of Australia's seven-match ODI tour of India while left-hander Shaun Marsh, who has recovered from his hamstring injury following a long injury-lay off, was named in the 15-member squad.

Michael Hussey replaces Clarke as the vice-captain after the latter was forced to miss the tour to continue his rehabilitation from back soreness.

Tim Paine, who impressed during the recently-concluded Australia's ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa, will continue as the wicketkeeper following Brad Haddin's unavailability due to a finger injury.

"We do have four players unavailable for this tour due to injury. Michael Clarke is continuing his rehabilitation from back soreness and Mike Hussey will be the vice captain for this tour. Brad Haddin continues his rehabilitation from finger surgery, following the injury he picked up during the Ashes series, and Tim Paine, following a fine ICC Champions Trophy, is selected as wicket keeper. Callum Ferguson continues to consult specialists over the knee injury he picked up during the Champions Trophy final and is not available for this tour. Nathan Bracken is also unavailable due to a knee injury," National Selection Panel chairman, Andrew Hilditch said on Friday.

22-year-old left-arm spinner Jon Holland is the new addition in the squad and was selected following his recent impressive performances for Australia A.

"Jon Holland is in the squad as we wanted to take the opportunity to give a young left arm finger spinner exposure both to the Australian team set up and Indian conditions. He has impressed in the recent Australia 'A' series against Pakistan and in his time at CA's Centre of Excellence. If an opportunity arises on tour we feel he will equip himself very well at international level," Hilditch said.

26-year-old Marsh was on the sidelines for nearly seven month after he injured his left hamstring during the ODI series against Pakistan in April.

Squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Hussey (vice-captain), Shane Watson, Tim Paine (w/k), Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Adam Voges, Cameron White, Shaun Marsh, James Hopes, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger, Jon Holland.
