India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla scored a maiden first class hundred to help Sussex reach a dominant position against Worcestershire on the third day of their County Championship Division One match in Worcester on Sunday.

Chawla, who signed this week as a temporary replacement for Pakistan's Yasir Arafat, was unbeaten on 102 as Sussex declared on 620 for 9, a first innings lead of 332.

It was the seventh-highest total in Sussex's history, and the largest Worcestershire have faced in 13 years.

Worcestershire were all out for 288 in their first innings.

Coming out to bat at number nine, Chawla cracked seven fours and six sixes in 95 minutes of exhilarating hitting, his second fifty coming off just 28 balls.

To cap a fine day, he then trapped Vikram Solanki and Ben Smith leg before as Worcestershire went to stumps on 120 for 3, needing 212 more to win, with seven wickets in hand on the final day.
