Impressed with the way India team snatched a narrow one-wicket victory over Australia in the first cricket Test, legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar said it is one of the greatest sporting achievements of the country.
"It has to be one of the greatest wins in Indian sports, not just in the Indian cricket. It is by far India's narrowest win in the Test cricket," Gavaskar said.
VVS Laxman battled severe back-pain to single-handedly take India to a memorable and miraculous one-wicket victory over Australia with a gritty unbeaten 73 at Mohali on Tuesday.
Gavaskar was all praise for the crucial 81-run partnership between Laxman and Ishant Sharma, which helped the hosts to inch closer to the 216-run victory target.
"The way it was achieved, when most of the major batsmen were out and eight wickets were down and India needed about 80-90 runs still to win... the way that partnership took place and took India close, I think it is got to be the greatest win and among the greatest achievements in Indian sports," Gavaskar told NDTV.
