Ashwin completes the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in Tests

India’s R Ashwin struck a counter-attacking half-century to help India claw back into the match after the hosts got off to a shaky start on Day 3.

Captain Kolhi also struck a crucial 62 runs to give India a much-needed boost in scoring.

Here are the statistical highlights from the second day’s play of the third Test between India and England in Mohali on Sunday.

# Parthiv Patel's innings of 42 is his highest score vs England in Tests, eclipsing the 19 not out at Nottingham in August 2002.

# Patel, as an opener, averages 37.00 in Tests. His tally reads 111 in three innings -- the sequence being 0 vs New Zealand at Hamilton in December 2002, 69 vs Pakistan at Rawalpindi in April 2004 and 42 vs England today.

# Patel's 42 is the second highest by an Indian wicketkeeper vs England in Tests at Mohali behind the 100 by Deep Dasgupta in December 2001.

# Murali Vijay-Patel pair became the sixth opening pair to represent India in Tests this year.

# Cheteshwar Pujara's record this year is superb, aggregating 748 at an average of 62.33 in nine Tests, including three hundreds and four fifties.

# Pujara has completed his 11,000 runs in first-class cricket -- his tally being 11016 (ave.57.37) in 137 matches, including 36 centuries and 37 fifties.

# Pujara has seven fifty-plus innings (3 tons + 4 50s) in Tests this year -- the most by an Indian. Just three batsmen have posted more such scores this year -- Joe Root (10), Jonny Bairstow (10), and Alastair Cook (9). His tally of seven 50-plus knocks is his best ever in a calendar year in Tests.

# Mohammed Shami has bagged 27 wickets at an average of 27.48 in 10 Tests -- highest tally posted by him in a calendar year, bettering the 24 (ave.46.20) in seven Tests in 2014.

# Shami has registered his best bowling figures vs England in Tests, surpassing the 2 for 30 at Visakhapatnam in the second Test of the series.

# Virat Kohli's second fifty vs England is his 14th in Tests.

# Kohli has totalled 399 runs at an average of 99.75 in five innings, including a century and two fifties -- his best ever performance in terms of run-aggregate in a Test series in India. This performance is his second best overall behind 692 in eight innings at an average of 86.50 vs Australia in 2014-15 in Australia.

# Kohli has become the 20th Indian player to complete 2000 runs or more in Tests in Asia -- his aggregate being 2014 at an average of 50.35 in 27 Tests, including six centuries

and 10 fifties.

# Karun Nair became the 12th Indian batsman who has been run-out on Test debut -- Anil Kumble was the last batsman to be dismissed in this way before Nair -- vs England at Manchester in August 1990.

# Ashwin has posted three 50-plus innings in the present series -- a distinction recorded by him for the first time in a Test series. His scores being 70 at Rajkot, 58 at Visakhapatnam and an unbeaten 57 at Mohali.

# Ashwin, during his unbeaten 57, has become the second Indian all-rounder to manage 500 runs or more apart from capturing 50 wickets in the same calendar year in Tests – his tally being 530 runs (ave.48.18) and 56 wickets at 22.60 runs apiece in 10 Tests. Kapil Dev had achieved the distinction twice in 1979 and 1983.

# Overall seven all-rounders have accomplished the double 10 times in a calendar year in Tests.

# Ashwin has become the fifth Indian all-rounder to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in Tests at home -- the first four being Vinoo Mankad, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

# Adil Rashid has taken 16 wickets at 28.18 runs apiece in the present series -- the most on either side. The tally is the fourth highest by an overseas leg spinner in a Test series in India -- the highest being 29 (ave.19.58) in the 1959-60 five-Test series by Richie Benaud.
