'It's not going to hurt Mitch...'

Former Australian captain Allan Border on Tuesday advised struggling pacer Mitchell Johnson to take a break international cricket for a week to recapture his rhythm.

"It's not going to hurt Mitch to stand down for a week, go out the back in the nets, and thunder in for the equivalent of up to 15 overs a day until he gets it right," Border said.

"Then he'll have nothing else to worry about apart from his bowling. He won't have to worry about going at six an over, like he did in the last Test," Border was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun.

The 27-year-old pacer's poor form continued as he managed only one wicket for 107 runs in the three-day practice match against Northamptonshire that ended on Sunday.

"There won't be any of the pressure and scrutiny that comes with being in the middle of a Test match. You want him in your side if he's bowling well because he's a genuine wicket-taker, but Australia simply can't let England get away like they did at Lord's," Border said.

Border also questioned Australia's Ashes preparation with just two practice matches before the first Test in Cardiff.

"When Australia does a post-mortem on the tour, it will be the same as 2005; what are we doing about our  reparation?" he asked.

The third Test will be in Birmingham from July 30.
