Pant's quickfire fifty keeps India afloat

November 03, 2024

India Inns 2: 92-6 (20 ovs); Target to win: 147 | Scorecard

Rishabh Pant's counter-attacking knock has kept India afloat after a shocking top order collapse on Day 3 of the third and final Test.

Pant stroked an unbeaten 53 from 50 balls to rally India to 92/6 in 20 overs. They still need another 55 runs for victory.

Once again, the Indian top order caved in against the New Zealand spinners with Ajaz Patel taking 4/43.

Rohit Sharma perished to a reckless shot, attempting the pull shot to be caught at mid-on off Matt Henry for 11.

Shubman Gill was bowled by Ajaz for 1 after he offered no shot and Kohli also fell for the same score after he was caught at slip off the same spinner.

Jaiswal was trapped leg before wicket by Glenn Phillips for five while Sarfaraz Khan miscued the sweep off a full toss to be caught at deep square leg for one as India slipped to 29/5 in the eighth over.

Pant revived the Indians as he put on 42 runs for the sixth wicket with Jadeja, who made six from 22 balls.

Pant got the mark with a straight six off Ajaz to make his intent clear. He slammed Phillips for back to back fours in the ninth over to bring back India.

Pant used the sweeps to good effect while also quick in picking the length whenever the spinners dropped short.

He hit Ajaz for two boundaries in a row to race to his fifty from 48 balls in the last over of the session.

India will hope Pant can see them through to victory but he needs good support from Sundar and if Ashwin comes out to bat next.
