Flower a strong candidate for England job: Strauss

March 27, 2009 07:13 IST

Captain Andrew Strauss backed Andy Flower to become England's full-time coach on Thursday.

Flower is standing in as coach during the five-match one-day series in the West Indies and Strauss said he has struck up a good relationship with the former Zimbabwe captain.

"We've worked very well together so it would be fantastic to continue what we've started," Strauss was quoted as saying on the BBC website.

England have been without a full-time coach since Peter Moores was sacked in January after his relationship with former captain Kevin Pietersen broke down.

"I think there are some general principles (from this tour) that I'd be very keen to keep," Strauss said.

"A new coach would probably have his own ideas and it's a case of compromising and making sure between you, you are going in the right direction.

"Now is not a time for thinking about that too much, but Andy is a strong candidate and there is a good chance that England will continue as they are but that remains to be seen in the coming weeks."

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have said they hope to have a full-time coach in place before the home series against West Indies in May.
