Kevin Pietersen had approached Australian spin legend and his former Hampshire captain Shane Warne for the England coach's job, according to media reports in Melbourne.

Sydney Morning Herald claimed in a report that Pietersen approached Warne to find out if the retired leggie was game to succeed Peter Moores as the England coach.

"Pietersen's plan was to have Warne as coach alongside former Victorian captain Darren Berry and former England all-rounder Jeremy Snape as assistants, the same coaching trio who were at Rajasthan last year when they won the inaugural IPL title," the daily quoted.

After his working relationship with Peter Moores broke down, Pietersen issued an 'either-me-or-him' ultimatum to the England and Wales Cricket Board, confident that ECB would bow to his demand and get rid of the coach.

The ECB was not amused by Pietersen and the episode eventually saw Pietersen stepping down from captaincy and Moores getting the boot.

According to the daily, it was after his fallout with Moores that Pietersen got in touch with Warne.

"Warne, whose cricket brain is among the world's sharpest, would not comment yesterday on the approach, but did not deny the suggestion," the report added.

It said Pietersen had even planned how ECB could manage the extra money so that they could make a really good offer to Warne.

"It is believed Pietersen's solution for this problem was to draw in a rich businessman to help with the deal," it said.
