Shaun Marsh to replace Phil Jaques

October 22, 2008 17:03 IST

Shaun Marsh was on Wednesday named the replacement for injured opener Phil Jaques in Australia's remaining two Tests against India.

Jaques had to return home without stepping on the field even once due to a lower back injury.

Australia's selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said Marsh is a 'potential' player with bat in hand.

"Shaun has been selected having opened the batting for Australia in the one-day international arena and shown great potential," Hilditch said.

"As a replacement batsman on the tour, should the opportunity arise, we are confident that Shaun could fill any role in the batting order.

"We have also taken the opportunity to enhance Shaun's international experience as we consider him to be one of the promising young batsmen in Australia capable of having a significant impact in Australian cricket in the future," Hilditch added.

The third Test of the series, which Australia trails 0-1, begins on October 29 in New Delhi.
