The Pakistan team was hit with fitness concerns ahead of the second Test against India after pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar was admitted to hospital with a chest infection.

Akhtar, who was running high temperature, was diagnosed with chest infection, team media manager Ehsan Malik said on Tuesday evening.

"The doctor diagnosed a chest infection and said it was advisable to put him on injectable antibiotics and intravenous fluids. He has been admitted to the hospital," Malik said.

He expressed hope that Akhtar would be discharged from the Apollo Gleneagles hospital, in Kolkata, in a day.

Asked whether Shoaib will recover before the second Test at the Eden Gardens, starting November 30, Malik replied, "We are hopeful that he will be able to play."

Earlier, Akhtar was taken to the hospital for a check-up. Hospital sources said Akhtar, who had low blood pressure, has been kept in the Maharaja suite.

Malik said Pakistan middle order bat Misbah-ul Haq, who developed a viral infection during the first Test in Delhi, is fast improving.

About skipper Shoaib Malik, who had an ankle sprain, he said, "We are hopeful he will be cured before the start of the Test match at the Eden Gardens."

The Pakistan team arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon and the skipper was seen limping as he alighted from the team bus.

Both Malik and Misbah had check-ups at the hospital before returning to the team hotel.
