Mother Nirupa on Sourav's 100th Test

December 24, 2007

The rest of the country can idolize Sourav Ganguly all it wants to; for mother Nirupa Ganguly, her second son is still the same simple, unspoilt kid who loves her cooking -- especially the biryanis, dal, and poshto.

"In 1996 Sourav played his first Test match and now he will be playing his 100th Test match. This is truly amazing. Let me tell you that 1996 or 2007, as a person Sourav has not changed a bit. At least for the family he is still the same simple person. He does not have any tantrums as far as eating habits are concerned. He loves biryani, dal, poshto. Basically he loves home cooked food.

I love watching cricket but I rarely discuss cricket with him. When he is batting I pray to God to help him realize his dreams. One more interesting thing I would like to share. When Sourav is batting his father never watches channel where the match is being aired. He will switch to any other channel other than the channel broadcasting Sourav's match. He will keep an eye on my moments and guess that he is still batting. Once he reaches landmark of 50 or 100 he will peep in for few seconds and then go off immediately.

My elder son Snehashish is ably running family business. Sourav is happy playing cricket. With God's grace both of them are successful. Because of media awareness Sourav has earned a big name. All of us are more than grateful to God for showering us with so much of happiness. I am so happy that even though Sourav has achieved so much, we as a family are still the same. As a family we are very close to each other. We are proud of his achievements, but our feets are firmly grounded. It is necessary to be humble. For me that is even more important."
