Baroda's pace too hot for Karnataka

November 23, 2006 19:07 IST

Former champions Karnataka were shot out for 85 runs by hosts Baroda on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite division match at the Moti Bagh stadium on Thursday.

Baroda already have a 43-run first innings lead, having ended the day on 128 for four.

Karnataka succumbed to the pace of Rakesh Patel, who grabbed the season's first five-wicket haul.

Patel got Baroda the breakthrough, trapping Robin Uthappa (12) leg before wicket for 12 and followed it with the wicket of Bharat Chipli in the next over.

Irfan Pathan may be having a tough time in international cricket, but his namesake and Baroda teammate, also a left-arm seamer, did further damage at the other end.

Pathan (senior), 28, bagged three for 31 as the Karnataka batsmen fell like nine pins in the face of Baroda's speedsters.

In reply, Baroda started shakily, as NC Aiyappa struck to reduce them to 24 for two. But the experienced Ajit Bhoite and Jacob Martin put them back on track with a 64-run partnership.

Bhoite missed a half-ton by a whisker as he holed out to Balchandra Akhil for 48.

At stumps, Martin was unbeaten on 28 along with youngster K Panchal, on 25.
