South African off-spinner Johan Botha has been suspended from bowling in international cricket for throwing, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday.

"Mr Botha's suspension is with immediate effect after independent analysis found that he was bowling with an illegal action during South Africa's third Test match against Australia in January," an ICC statement said.

Botha, 23, made his Test debut in the match, taking two wickets, one in each innings. He was cited by match referee Chris Broad after concerns were raised over his 'doosra' and quicker deliveries.

"The independent report has identified excessive levels of straightening in both his off-break and doosra deliveries," ICC general manager Dave Richardson said.

"It is now up to Johan to remedy the concerns that have been identified ahead of a reassessment which will be necessary if he is to return to international cricket."

Botha was part of South Africa's unsuccessful attempt to reach the final of the triangular one-day series with Australia and Sri Lanka, taking five wickets in seven matches at 47.60 apiece. South Africa were knocked out earlier on Tuesday.
