Software giant Wipro Ltd is planning to invest in another software development complex in West Bengal if it gets the special economic zone status from the central government.
The chairman-cum-managing director of Wipro Azim Premji, who was in Jamshedpur to attend the 49th annual convocation of Xavier Labour Relation Institute, told reporters that Wipro was planning to invest in the upcoming Rajarhat IT hub in West Bengal provided it was accorded special economic zone status by the union ministry of commerce.
Wipro had already hired about 1500 IT professionals within seven months after it started work at its Kolkata software centre, he said adding that the company was already in talks with the state government to allocate land for the second software unit in the Eastern metropolis.
Premji admitted that allocation of land by West Bengal government would not be a problem but the green signal from the commerce ministry for special economic zone was being awaited.
Besides, the software company was also proposing to set up a software centre in Goa, he said, but ruled out possibility of investment in Jharkhand or Orissa in near future due to poor air connectivity.
Considering the booming IT business, the requirements as well as convenience of global customers has to be taken into consideration while planning a new venture, he said.
