IT major Wipro has proposed to establish a software economic zone in Kolkata, according to a top government official.

The Union commerce ministry had given the in-principle approval to the Wipro's proposal, Commerce Secretary S N Menon said at Coffee Export Awards ceremony in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Menon, however, said he did not know the details of the investment proposed by the New York Stock Exchange-listed company.

The in-principle approval had been given for setting up 38 special economic zones in the country, he said, adding a SEZ legislation was expected to be in place within the next few weeks.

Asserting that SEZs would attract substantial investment and create world-class infrastructure, Menon said SEZs would not be government-driven but would jointly be taken up by the private sector and the states. Centre would play the role of a facilitator.

He said the proposed creation of SEZs in the country is based on studies and the government believes that the Chinese experiment in the matter of SEZs cannot be duplicated in India.
