India's leading information technology czar, chairman of Wipro Corp, Azim Premji has bought a 150-acre plot of land at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, to set up an information technology project, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh told newswires, according to a report on moneycontrol.com.

The plot of land is in Greater Noida, which is around 40 kilometre from the national capital. "He (Premji) was satisfied with the geographical position of the land and expressed eagerness to set up an IT project in the state," said Singh.

He, however, refused to comment on the price of the deal. Expressing optimism, Singh said Premji will soon convert Greater Noida into another Silicon Valley after Bangalore.

When contacted, Wipro officials in Bangalore said they were unaware of the purchase, adding that Premji may have bought it in his personal capacity.

Earlier reports had said that Wipro is evaluating five to six new locations for expanding its operations in the country.

"We continue to look at more opportunities where there is infrastructure, workforce and fibre optics. We are looking at least five to six more locations," Wipro Spectramind chairman and managing director Raman Roy told newspersons in New Delhi on December 24.

He said the company was trying to weigh its options and also its future plans. "Expansion is a given in our business. We went live in Kolkata last month and are very excited about the growth. We already have a thousand people in Kolkata," he said.

He said Wipro Spectramind had 13,000 people at the end of last quarter. "We will continue to grow and people will need seats."

On the impact of US election results on business, he said customers are back and are buoyant on business. There is a huge opportunity for the sector to grow and the only limitation is limitations as a country, he added.
