Indian software giant, Wipro said on Thursday that it was developing a low-cost computer that would run on low power and would have inbuilt source of two hours of standby power supply.
Speaking at Connect-04, the IT exposition organised jointly by Tamil Nadu government and the Confederation of Indian Industry in Chennai, Azim Premji, chairman, Wipro, said the low-cost computer was being designed mainly for the 700 million people living in 600,000 villages of the country who had not benefited from the digital revolution.
Standby power would mean the computer would be attractive to the rural people, who experience frequent power cuts, he said, speaking on the theme of 'Connecting the rural India -- a legendary vision'.
Wipro had been helping the people of 11 villages in Pondicherry to learn computer skills since 1998, he added.
A major area that could benefit from the increased IT adoption in villages was e-governance, Premji said, adding computers would also attract more students to schools in rural areas.
