Carhartt to buy $40 mn textiles

Workmen clothing company, Carhartt, which has till now sourced only from the United States and Europe, has set its eyes on India and could buy $40 million worth of fabric and garments from manufacturers.

Top officials of the company are currently visiting India to look for suppliers. The firms on their radar are Arvind, JCT, Asmiha, Alok Industries and Maral Overseas.

Apart from India, the team from Carhartt will also visit China and Taiwan.

"Overall Carhartt team is looking for 14 to 15 items. Some of these could be sourced from India and the rest of the orders could flow to China and Taiwan," Prashant Agarwal, Manager at consultancy firm KSA Technopak, said.

Carhartt has appointed KSA for advice while exploring soucing opportunities in India.

He said the US-based company could start by sourcing 2.0 lakh metres of fabric from India and could scale it to 20 lakh metres per annum.

Carhartt is interested in buying denim and knitted items from India. The company is also looking for turnkey garment suppliers.

Carhartt, which has not sourced from Asia earlier, is now looking at the option in view of phasing out of quotas in the world textile trade.

KSA is in talks with five other textiles and garment companies which have not sourced from India earlier.
