Communication Minister Arun Shourie on Thursday said talks were on with the defence ministry for widening the bandwidth in the telecom sector and this would "change the face of telecommunication in the country".

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Shourie said talks with the defence ministry for widening the bandwidth for smooth and easier accessibility is under progress.

He said the unified licence regime will also give a boost to the sector in the next two to three years.

In reply to a question on whether the domestic telephone rate was higher than the mobile phone, the minister said intense research is going on to increase the range of wireless from 100 to 200 miles.

"The future of the country is wireless signal," he said adding the fixed line is very expensive as compared to wireless technology.

The minister said India's cellphone subscriber base growing at the rate of 1.3 million new subscribers every month is one of the highest in the world.
