Tax mop up rises to Rs 2,30,839 cr

The Centre's gross tax collection was up by about 19 per cent at Rs 2,30,839 crore (Rs 2308.39 billion) till December this fiscal backed by spurt in corporate earnings and imports.

Net collection after providing for states share was also up by 19 per cent at Rs 1,68,715 crore (Rs 1687.15 billion) till December, data released by the Controller General of Accounts showed.

In case of direct taxes, corporation tax was up by 21.6 per cent at Rs 60,457 crore (Rs 604.57 billion) in the first nine months of 2005-06 as corporates improved their earnings in the first three quarters of 2005-06.

The December corporate tax collections was highest so far this fiscal as the Centre mopped up Rs 21,071 crore (Rs 210.71 billion).

The income tax collection increased by 14.6 per cent to Rs 36,545 crore (Rs 365.45 billion) till December.

In case of indirect taxes, customs duty collection was up by 16 per cent to Rs 47,888 crore (Rs 478.88 billion) till December as imports of both petroleum and capital goods surged.

However, excise duties grew by 8.7 per cent to Rs 67,220 crore (Rs 672.20 billion) in April-December this fiscal despite increase in industrial activity.

Other taxes especially service taxes added another Rs 18,729 crore (Rs 187.29 billion) to the government's kitty.

Of the gross tax collection, Centre passed on Rs 61,236 crore (Rs 612.36 billion) to states as part of their share in revenue till December.
