Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata on Tuesday expressed hope that the West Bengal government would be able to acquire land for its ambitious Rs 1 lakh car project in the state.
Tata told reporters that the West Bengal government was very supportive and he was hopeful that land acquisition process would be completed.
Tata Motors has decided to locate the small car project at Singur in Hooghly district in the state, for which the company had sought 1,000 acres.
Locals had strongly opposed the acquisition on grounds that this would lead to conversion of multi-crop land for industrial use, and they would be lose their means of livelihood.
Tata Motors has decided to invest Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) in the state for the project.
Tata said that the group was committed to West Bengal and that it was putting up a Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) advanced cancer care centre in the capital city.
