Tata Motors April sales down 4.2%

Tata Motors Ltd on Monday reported a 4.2 per cent decline in total sales, including exports, at 23,889 vehicles in April 2005 compared to 24,961 vehicles sold in April 2004.

Total sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles dipped to 5,680 units in April'05 as against 8,292 units in the same month last fiscal, while for light commercial vehicles, it rose slightly to 4,479 units (4,457 units), according to a release.

Utility vehicle sales for last month were flat at 2,053 units as against 2,052 units in the corresponding month last fiscal.

Car sales, however, grew to 11,677 units in April as against 10,160 units in the same month in 2003-04.

Tata Motor's flagship vehicle Indica sales grew by 7.9 per cent to 7,819 units while Indigo grew by 5.8 per cent to 2,881 units in April 2005.

Exports for the month rose 194 per cent to 2,785 units as compared to 948 units in the comparable period.

The company said that the increase in undispatched stock of vehicles was due to unanticipated difficulties and procurement of some critical parts.

It said that efforts to streamline the availability of vehicles were currently underway and the company expected to make up in the next couple of months.
