Major central trade unions, including financial institutions and state and central government employees associations, will go on a nationwide strike on February 24, H V Ananthasubbarao, Karnataka general secretary, All India Trade Union Congress, said.
The strike is being observed demanding steps from the government to negate the impact of Supreme Court's observation on the right to strike among others, he told reporters in Mangalore on Saturday.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Union Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma had given assurances at the Indian Labour Conference held during September last to hold discussions on the issue but nothing has been done so far, he said.
Trade unions were urging the government to prepare people-oriented economic policies, Rao said.
