Addressing the International Steel Seminar in Kolkata on Friday, former development commissioner of Iron & Steel Mihir Kr Moitra said world steel production had crossed the level of 1000 million tonnes in 2004 compared to 850 million tonnes in 2000.
He said the role of Chinese industry was extremely significant in the growth process.
The two-day seminar would have six technical sessions where industry experts would express their views on various aspects of the steel industry.
