The anti-tobacco activists in Indore on Monday appealed to the government and private companies to adopt a 'no-smoking' norm in their employment policies on the lines of the United States where majority of the companies and government offices did not employ those addicted to tobacco products.

Dr B M Shrivastava, principal of Government Dental College and an anti-tobacco campaigner, made the appeal, citing various examples in the US, where a number of business establishment and workplaces have turned smoke-free and refuse to hire smokers.

Similar rules can be adopted by the companies and government offices in India also to check the spread of tobacco related diseases, he said.

The smokers should also be given a timeframe to get out of the habit and if they do so then they should be given some incentive, he added.
