Sensex gains 692 points to 19,854

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 146 points at 19,308, and zoomed to a high of 19,879 in noon deals.

The index finally closed with a huge gain of 692 points (3.6%) at 19,854. The Nifty gained 219 points to close at 5,985.

All the sectoral indices, too, rallied sharply today. The BSE IT index zoomed over 6%  (261 points) to 4582. The BSE Bankex, Power, PSU and TECk indices moved up 3-5% each today.

Market breadth was bullish - out of 2,937 scrips traded, 1,961 moved up and 945 declined today.

Tech stocks lead rally

Wipro zoomed 9% (Rs 43) to Rs 535. Infosys gained nearly 7% (Rs 112) to Rs 1,811.

While TCS was up 6% (Rs 67) at Rs 1,109, Satyam also added 6% (Rs 27) to Rs 454.

Reliance advanced nearly 3% (Rs 73) to Rs 2,788. Bharti was
up 6% (Rs 55) at Rs 970. ICICI Bank gained over 4% to close at Rs 1,208.

Bajaj dropped 3% (Rs 79) to Rs 2,713. Maruti and ACC were down marginally at 990 and Rs 1,001, respectively.

Modi magic works for Gujarat stocks

Stocks of Gujarat-based companies rallied sharply today after Narendra Modi led BJP back to power in the state yesterday.

GHCL topped the list with a gain of over 13% at Rs 199. Mundra Port moved up 9% to Rs 1,156. Gujarat Narmada, GSFC, Gujarat Petronet and Gujarat Alkali also logged gains today.

Most active counters

IFCI was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 300 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 242 crore), Mundra Port (Rs 143 crore), Reliance (Rs 131 crore) and Reliance Petroleum (Rs 130 crore).
