Sensex ends down 352 points at 19,281

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 122 points at 19,511 on the back of weak global cues. Fresh buying at lower levels saw the index rebound into the positive zone and touch a high of 19,714.

The index, however, could not hold gains and came tumbling down to 19,196 - down 518 points from the day's high - in late noon trades. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 353 points at 19,281.

The Nifty lost 127 points to close at 5,781.

The market breadth was positive - of 2,866 stocks traded, 1,553 advanced, 1,272 declined and 41 were unchanged today.

Index Shakers...

Hindalco tumbled 5.5% to Rs 194. BHEL plunged 4.7% to Rs 2,654.

DLF and Maruti Suzuki dropped over 4% each to Rs 908 and Rs 1,010, respectively.

Grasim and Infosys shed 3.5% each at Rs 3,735 and Rs 1,564, respectively.

ONGC and Mahindra & Mahindra slipped over 3% each to Rs 1,222 and Rs 726, respectively. TCS declined 2.8% to Rs 961.

Reliance shed 2.3% at Rs 2,787. HDFC, NTPC and Wipro dropped 2% each to Rs 2,638, Rs 260 and Rs 449, respectively.

Reliance Energy was down 1.8% at Rs 1,794. ICICI Bank, Satyam and HDFC Bank were the other major losers.

Value & Volume Toppers

Reliance Petroleum topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 307.25 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 251.20 crore), IDFC (Rs 240.60 crore), IFCI (Rs 239 crore) and Tata Teleservices (Rs 222.50 crore).

Tata Teleservices led the volume chart with trades of around 4.23 crore shares followed by Himachal Futuristic (2.85 crore), IFCI (2.35 crore), Ispat Industries (2.03 crore) and J P Hydropower (1.65 crore).
