Sensex makes remarkable recovery; ends flat

Markets have taken dramatic turnaround during the last leg of the session. The intra day loss for the Sensex was over 200 points but later recovered as technology and telecom stocks outperformed.

The Sensex closed up 1.23 points or 0.01% at 13430.71, and the Nifty was up 3.35 points or 0.09% at 3856.15.

About 885 shares have advanced, 1537 shares declined, and 60 shares are unchanged.

Bharti Airtel, HDFC, Infosys, Reliance Comm and Jet Airways were the top gainers on the indices.

ACC, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Maruti Udyog, GAIL and IPCL were the top losers on the indices.

The BSE Midcap Index was down 0.85% or 46.85 points at 5,454.43.

The BSE Small Cap Index was down 0.96% or 60.98 points at 6,298.49.

The BSE Auto Index was down 0.51% or 26.66 points at 5,184.75. Escorts, Amtek Auto, Apollo Tyres, Ashok Leyland and Punj Tractors witness selling pressure.

The BSE Bankex plunged 1.81% or 129.23 points at 6,995.62. Kotak Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda, IOB and Allahabad Bank fell.

The BSE Capital Goods Index plummet 1.48 % or 129.64 points at 8,650.36. Gammon India, Aban Offshore, Alstom Projects, HEG and BEML closed down.

The BSE FMCG Index slipped 0.78% or 15.59 points at 1,990.03. Shaw Wallace, Colgate, United Spirits, ITC and Tata Tea ended in red.

The BSE Health Care Index tumbled 1.13% or 42.06 points at 3,664.69.  Apollo Hospital, Cadila Health, Biocon, Novartis India and Ranbaxy Labs closed in negative.

The BSE Metal Index slid 2.33% or 204.62 points at 8,584.93. Hind Zinc, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, Guj NRE Coke and Tata Steel meltdown.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index fell 0.58% or 35.92 points at 6,131.17. Chennai Petro, GAIL, BPCL and MRPL plunged.

However, the BSE IT Index surged 2.31% or 114.54 points at 5,063.89. Mphasis BFL, Hexaware Tech, Infosys, TCS, Satyam and I-Flex Solution moved up.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9618.21 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 34811.51 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4244.7 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 48674.42 crore.
