The markets opened strong and were tradig at the higher level for most part of the day. Profit booking set in during the final hour of trade and the markets reversed their direction and slipped in the red.
The Sensex closed at 11,502.62 down 9 points and the Nifty closed flat at 3365 down 1 point.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,826.39 up 8 points or 0.14%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,813.23, up 6 points or 0.12%.
The BSE sectoral closed in red, but the metal stocks held out their gains and the index closed in the positive.
The consumer durables index gained 2.5% at 3,060.73. Whirlpool and Blue Star were top gainers.
The BSE Metal Index gained 1.5% at 8,213.66. Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel, Welspun Guj, SAILand Guj NRE Coke witnessed buying interest.
The BSE Bankex was closed flat at 5,193.13. Kotak Mahindra, Bank of India, UTI Bank, Bank of Baroda moved downwards.
The BSE IT Index lost 0.5% at 5,441.51. Hexaware Tech, Infosys, Satyam, HCL Tech closed in red.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 0.6% at 5,451.95. HPCL, BPCL, IOC, Kochi Refin and Chennai Petro declined on the bourses.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was lost 0.54% at 7,695.52. Crompton Greave, Greaves Cotton, Aban LoydChiles, Carborundum and BHEL closed lower.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.2% 1,984.37. Shaw Wallace, McDowell, HLL, Nestle and Britannia closed in negative terrain.
The BSE Auto Index lost 0.6% at 4,951.08. Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Apollo Tyres, Bajaj Auto, M&M slipped on the bourses
The BSE Health Care Index was down 1% at 3,518.47. Wyeth, Apollo Hospital, GlaxoSmithKline, Wockhardt and Sterling Bio closed lower.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6285.15 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 20593.56 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3064.61 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 29943.32 crore.
