The Sensex opened with a marginal positive gap of 34 points at 10,105, but soon slipped in red to a low of 10,011. The index, thereafter, exhibited high volatility till mid-noon deals.
Heavy buying towards the close saw the index zoomed to a high of 10,477 - up 466 points from the day's low. The index finally settled with a gain of 380 points at 10,451.
The Nifty gained 129 points to close at 3,091.
The BSE Metal index surged 4.8% to 8,573, and the auto index rallied 4.2% to 4,774. The FMCG index gained almost 4% at 1,895, and the Oil & Gas index was up 3.5% at 5,081.
Reflecting the weak market breadth, the Mid-cap index slipped 0.8% to 4,873, and the Small-cap index dropped 2.5% to 5,986.
The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,457 stocks traded, 1,804 declined, 609 advanced and 44 were unmoved today.
Index Movers & Shakers
Maruti zoomed nearly 13% to Rs 769. Tata Motors rallied 6.5% to Rs 789. Hero Honda gained 4.5% at Rs 762, and Bajaj Auto added 4% to Rs 2,718.
While HLL soared over 8% to Rs 242, ITC moved up 2.7% to Rs 164.
Hindalco zoomed 8% to Rs 180, and Tata Steel surged 6% to Rs 518.
ONGC surged 4.7% to Rs 1,126, and Reliance added 3.5% to Rs 957.
Wipro advanced 5.8% to Rs 470, and TCS rallied 4.5% to Rs 1,788. Satyam and Infosys were up around 2% each at Rs 668 adn Rs 2,886, respectively.
HDFC moved up 7% to Rs 1,190. Bharti Airtel added 5.5% to Rs 366.
ACC and Grasim gained around 6% each at Rs 786 and Rs 1,801, respectively. Gujarat Ambuja moved up 2.5% to Rs 93.
Other Gainers & Losers
Goetze India zoomed over 11% to Rs 310. Punj Lloyd, Aztec Software, Supreme Industries, UTI Bank, ABB, Everest Industries and Gail India were the other major gainers today.
Swaraj Mazda slumped 10% to Rs 269. Indorama Textiles, Chowgule Steamship, Indoco Remedies, Atul, Sterlite Optical, Engineers India, Hindustan Zinc, ICI India, Rolta, Hexaware and Micro Inks were the other prominent losers today.
Value & Volume Toppers
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 224.15 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 138.24 crore), Hindustan Zinc (Rs 103.15 crore), Maruti (Rs 101.48 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 99.33 crore).
Dewan Housing led the volume chart with trades of around 54 lakh shares followed Hindalco (45.13 lakh), SAIL (40.80 lakh), IFCI (35.76 lakh) and ITC (31.50 lakh).
