The markets opened firm on Tuesday and crossed the 7,800 mark after opening with a gain of 7 points at 7,774.
After moving in a narrow, negative range for most part of the afternoon session, the Sensex finally gained 1 point to close at 7,768.
The Nifty closed at 2,370, with a loss of 11 points.
Gainers: Wipro, HLL, HDFC, Cipla, Bharti, Bajaj, ONGC.
Losers: Infosys, TCS, Satyam, Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy's, ICICI Bank, SBI, Tata Motors, Hero Honda.
