The markets witnessed strong optimism during the trading session today. Although the Sensex resumed 13 points lower over its last close at 6,768, it soon bounced back into the green to remain firm thereafter.
While the index breached the 6,800-mark in early trades and registered around 40-50 point gains, the market lost some sheen in early noon trades amid profit-taking in select old and new economy stocks.
The markets shrugged off its range-bound trend on the resumption of fresh buying support, with the index rallying past the 6,850-mark towards the closing hours to touch a high of 6,863 - up 95 points from the day's low.
The Sensex finally wrapped up the session with a surge of 77 points at 6,858. The Nifty moved up 14 points to 2,112.
Reliance advanced 1.95% (Rs 11) to Rs 558. ITC scaled up 2% (Rs 31) to Rs 1,581. While ONGC shed 1.41% (Rs 13) to Rs 921, HLL ended with a rupee loss at Rs 142.
Infosys spurted 2.80% (Rs 62) to Rs 2,298. While Satyam notched up 2.72% gains (Rs 13) to Rs 472, TCS clocked a per cent gain (Rs 13) to Rs 1,291. Wipro ended with marginal gains at Rs 733.
ICICI Bank flared up 3.45% (Rs 14) to Rs 420. While SBI was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 689, HDFC Bank, however, ended weak at Rs 586 - down Rs 3.
Hindalco jumped 2.14% (Rs 23) to Rs 1,117, and HDFC moved up 2.58% (Rs 21) to Rs 827. While Reliance Energy rose 3% (Rs 17) to Rs 566, Tisco closed up a tad at Rs 339.
Maruti gained 1.50% (Rs 7) to Rs 464, and Tata Motors was up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 438. Bajaj, however, dropped nearly 2% (Rs 25) to Rs 1,262.
Dr. Reddy's shed 1.96% (Rs 14) to Rs 711, while Ranbaxy slipped by Rs 5 to Rs 1,084. Cipla, however, gained 1.72% (Rs 5) to Rs 295.
