The Sensex opened with a small gain of two points at 6,467. Broad-based buying in early trades saw the index zoom past the 6,500-mark to touch an intra-day high of 6,516.
The markets, however, witnessed a steady fall thereafter as profit-taking in select counters trimmed the gains of the index, and a range-bound (positive) trend prevailed in the market till early noon trades.
The Sensex slipped into the red in mid-noon trades as correction in select heavyweights, tech and other old economy stocks dragged it to a low of 6,449.
After languishing in negative territory till the closing hours of the trading session, the Sensex finally ended in the green at 6,468 - up three points over its last close.
The Nifty, too, recovered from its mid-noon slump and ended two points higher at 2,027.
HLL gained 1.55% (Rs 2) to Rs 135, and ITC was up a per cent (Rs 14) at Rs 1,415.
Gujarat Ambuja on reports of likely bonus and stock split flared up 4.75% (Rs 19) to Rs 425. While ACC was up 1.23% (Rs 4) at Rs 367, Grasim ended off-highs at Rs 1,206 - up Rs 6.
ICICI Bank logged a per cent gain (Rs 4) to Rs 412. While HDFC Bank closed up a notch at Rs 559, SBI ended marginally weak at Rs 645.
Bajaj, after a mixed outing, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 10) at Rs 1,090. Tata Motors and Maruti, too, were up a per cent each at Rs 425 and Rs 412, respectively. Hero Honda, however, dropped 2.28% (Rs 12) to Rs 514.
HDFC surged 2% (Rs 14) to Rs 724. While BHEL added 1.27% (Rs 10) to Rs 801, HPCL was up 1.42% (Rs 5) at Rs 328.
ONGC and Reliance lost a per cent each to Rs 877 (down Rs 7) and Rs 545 (down Rs 3), respectively.
Infosys slipped into the red in mid-morning trades and ended with a per cent loss (Rs 16) at Rs 2,102. While Satyam, too, lost a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 408, Wipro closed up a notch at Rs 646.
Reliance Energy declined 1.65% (Rs 9) to Rs 514, while Tisco shed 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 381. Zee also ended in the red at Rs 136 - down Rs 2 or 1.45%.
