Sensex up 53 points at close

The Sensex, which touched an intra-day high of 5,734, came off-highs on profit-taking in select counters towards the close and ended the session at 5,716 - up 53 points. The Nifty gained 16 points to close at 1,800.

Infosys was a star attraction for the day, and the counter soared 4.27% (Rs 80) to Rs 1,948. While Wipro surged 2.70% (Rs 17) to Rs 659, Satyam clocked a per cent gain (Rs 4) to Rs 385.

HLL, which reported a dip in its third quarter net, advanced 3.74% (Rs 4) to Rs 125. While ITC was marginally up at Rs 1,087, Reliance ended with a marginal loss of Rs 2 at Rs 540.

HPCL added 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 313. While SBI shed a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 444, ONGC was down a rupee at Rs 792.

Bajaj clocked a per cent gain (Rs 8) to Rs 956. While Tata Motors moved up 2.15% (Rs 9) to Rs 418, Maruti was up 1.61% (Rs 6) at Rs 365. Hero Honda, however, lost 2.29% (Rs 10) to Rs 427.

HDFC dropped 3% (Rs 20) to Rs 639. While Hindalco crashed 1.65% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,227, Zee declined 2.14% (Rs 3) to Rs 151.

Cement and pharma stocks ended on a mixed note on Thursday.
