The Sensex declined a per cent or 60 points to close at 5,581. The Nifty was down 23 points at 1,757.
Infosys bucked the trend and posted a smart gain of 2.3% (Rs 42) at Rs 1,819. Satyam plunged 4.6% (Rs 17) to Rs 354, and Wipro lost a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 634.
Reliance declined Rs 3 to Rs 536. ITC and HLL posted marginal losses at Rs 123.55 and Rs 1,080, respectively.
HPCL plunged almost 5% (Rs 16) to Rs 307. ONGC dropped Rs 7 to Rs 792.
SBI slumped 5% (Rs 23) to Rs 439. While ICICI Bank was down Rs 5 at Rs 285, HDFC Bank was up Rs 5 at Rs 409.
HDFC finished 1.3% (Rs 9) lower at Rs 655.
Bhel rallied 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 642. Larsen & Toubro added 1.2% (Rs 10) to Rs 830.
Hindalco and Tisco dropped 1.4% each to Rs 1,212 and Rs 280, respectively.
Cipla shed nearly 2% (Rs 5) to Rs 270. Dr.Reddy's was down Rs 5 at Rs 744, and Ranbaxy declined Rs 2 to Rs 1,068.
Gujarat Ambuja crashed over 4% (Rs 15) to Rs 344. ACC collapsed 3.5% (Rs 9) to Rs 254. Grasim dropped 3.3% (Rs 37) to Rs 1,092.
Tata Motors tumbled 4.3% (Rs 18) to Rs 393. Bajaj Auto plunged over 3% (Rs 30) to Rs 926. Maruti declined 2.5% (Rs 9) to Rs 349, and Hero Honda was down Rs 3 at Rs 416.
Tata Power toppled over 4% (Rs 13) to Rs 301. Reliance Energy ended 3.2% (Rs 20) lower at Rs 616.
While Bharti Tele gained 1.4% (Rs 2) at Rs 151, Zee ended 1.5% (Rs 2) lower at Rs 152.
