The Sensex plunged 65 points to close at 5,673. The Nifty finished 18 points lower at 1,790.
Satyam was the major loser, and the scrip plunged 5.5% (Rs 22) to Rs 380. Infosys declined Rs 7 to Rs 1,759, and Wipro finished Rs 5 lower at Rs 647.
Reliance slumped 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 548. ITC shed Rs 8 to Rs 1,791, and HLL dropped a per cent to Rs 125.
HPCL slipped 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 325, and ONGC ended Rs 6 lower at Rs 804.
ICICI Bank declined 2.1% (Rs 6) to Rs 290. HDFC Bank and SBI, also, declined over a per cent each to Rs 410 and Rs 460, respectively.
Hindalco and Tisco, too, ended with a loss of a per cent each at Rs 1,232 and Rs 285, respectively.
Cipla shed 1.7% (Rs 5) to Rs 275. Dr.Reddy's was down nearly a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 751. Ranbaxy, however, ended a rupee higher at Rs 1,091.
Bajaj Auto skidded 2.3% (Rs 23) to Rs 982. Maruti and Tata Motors declined a per cent each to Rs 359 and Rs 412, respectively. However, Hero Honda finished unchanged at Rs 420.
Gujarat Ambuja surged 1.3% (Rs 5) to Rs 359. Grasim dropped a per cent (Rs 12) to Rs 1,130. ACC finished a rupee higher at Rs 265.
While Reliance Energy tripped 1.5% (Rs 10) to Rs 639, Tata Power shed a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 312.
Zee was the major gainer, and the stock zoomed 3.9% (Rs 6) to Rs 161. Bharti Tele tumbled 1.4% (Rs 2) to Rs 149.
