The Sensex ended 47 points higher at 5,135. The Nifty advanced 15 points at 1,611.
Bhel zoomed over 4% (Rs 23) to Rs 570. Bajaj Auto, HPCL and Cipla were the other major gainers among the Sensex stocks.
Reliance was up Rs 3 at Rs 461. ITC gained over a per cent to close at Rs 1,044, and HLL was firm at Rs 112.
Wipro gained nearly 1.5% (Rs 8) to Rs 573. Infosys was up Rs 10 at Rs 1,545, and Satyam ended a rupee higher at Rs 340.
ICICI Bank advanced nearly 3% (Rs 8) to Rs 274. SBI was up over a per cent at Rs 436, and HDFC Bank closed flat at Rs 375.
Cement stocks ended on a weak note - Grasim was down nearly a per cent at Rs 1,094.
