Sensex ends flat at 4944

The Sensex on Monday closed down a point at 4,944. The Nifty added four points to end at 1,557.

The index, which opened with a gain of four points at 4,949, touched a high of 4,968. However, in mid-noon trades, the market slipped into the red, touching an intra-day low of 4,917.

Reliance closed down a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 436. ITC (down Rs 4 to Rs 1,053) slipped due to profit-taking. HLL, however, ended with a gain of 1.27% (Rs 2) at Rs 124.

BHEL (down Rs 4 to Rs 532) and HPCL (down a rupee to Rs 288) ended on a subdued note. ONGC, on late buying support, gained 1.39% (Rs 9) to Rs 680. While SBI added Rs 3 to Rs 432, MTNL closed up a tad at Rs 134. 

Grasim lost 1.14% (Rs 12) to Rs 1,012. Gujarat Ambuja and ACC were down a per cent at Rs 279 (down Rs 3) and Rs 240 (down Rs 2), respectively.

Hero Honda shed 2.74% (Rs 14) to Rs 487. Bajaj was down Rs 3 at Rs 912. Tata Motors moved up 1.79% (Rs 7) to Rs 423. Maruti was up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 431.

Satyam attracted buying support today, and notched up 3.59% gains (Rs 11) to Rs 317. While Infosys lost Rs 6 to Rs 1,376, Wipro was down Rs 2 at Rs 498.

Cipla moved up 1.78% (Rs 4) to Rs 234. Dr. Reddy's ended with a rupee gain at Rs 764, Ranbaxy closed marginally lower at Rs 982.

Bharti ended down 2% (Rs 3) at Rs 155.

HDFC declined 1.83% (Rs 10) to Rs 549. Hindalco and HDFC Bank were down a per cent at Rs 1,070 (down Rs 9) and Rs 365 (down Rs 3), respectively.

Tisco jumped 2.56% (Rs 8) to close at Rs 314. Reliance Energy was up Rs 2 at Rs 565. Zee closed up a per cent at Rs 129.
