The Sensex, however, slightly came off its highs on profit-taking in select counters, and finally wrapped up the session with a gain of 48 points at 4,756.
The Nifty added 17 points to close at 1,488, coming off its day's high of 1,494.
While 21 Sensex stocks advanced, nine declined today. Advancing shares registered a volume of 3.15 crore amounting to Rs 1,106.53 crore, and declining shares accounted for a volume of 80 lakh for Rs 300.42 crore.
Reliance had a decent outing today, and advanced 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 432. ITC was up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 865. HLL, however, ended weak with a loss of nearly 2% (Rs 2) at Rs 128.
MTNL gained 2.88% (Rs 3) to Rs 121. HPCL was up 1.15% (Rs 4) at Rs 313.
ONGC, BHEL and SBI, however, ended with marginal losses at Rs 634, Rs 495 and Rs 419, respectively.
Infosys added 1.34% (Rs 72) to Rs 5,478. Satyam also ended at higher at Rs 307 - up Rs 5 or 1.55%. Wipro closed up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 532.
Grasim rose 2.68% (Rs 25) to Rs 944. While Gujarat Ambuja jumped 3.44% (Rs 9) to Rs 275, ACC was up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 235.
Tata Motors gained 2.18% (Rs 8) to Rs 380. While Hero Honda was up nearly 2% (Rs 7) at Rs 494, Maruti was up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 385. Bajaj was marginally down by Rs 2 at Rs 890.
Cipla, after exhibiting sharp gains yesterday, closed down a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 202. Ranbaxy also ended in the red at Rs 903 - down Rs 2. Dr. Reddy's, however, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 6) at Rs 723.
Hindalco shot up 3.92% (Rs 37) to Rs 971. Tisco spurted 7.72% (Rs 21) to Rs 296. Tata Power advanced 4.42% (Rs 10) to Rs 229.
HDFC added 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 552. Bharti, which ended off-gains yesterday, attracted considerable buying support today, and vaulted 5.50% (Rs 7) to Rs 133. While Reliance Energy moved up 1.54% (Rs 8) to Rs 559, Zee was up a rupee at Rs 121.
HDFC Bank, however, dropped 4.24% (Rs 16) to Rs 366.
