Sensex gains 75 points at close

The Sensex on Tuesday closed with a gain of 75 points at 4,835, following steady buying in heavyweight, PSU, cement and auto stocks. The Nifty ended above the 1,500-mark at 1,508 -- up 24 points.

While 25 Sensex stocks advanced, five declined today.

ITC rose 2.58% (Rs 23) to end at Rs 902. Reliance was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 434. HLL, however, closed down a tad at Rs 137.

HPCL shot up 6.70% (Rs 20) to Rs 321. MTNL notched up 4.87% gains (Rs 5) to Rs 117. SBI was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 469. BHEL, however, slipped from higher levels to end 2.32% lower (Rs 10) at Rs 425.

Tata Motors zoomed 7.61% (Rs 28) to Rs 394. Bajaj gained 3.22% (Rs 28) to Rs 900. Hero Honda added 3.60% (Rs 16) to Rs 462. Maruti moved up nearly 4% (Rs 15) to close at Rs 402.

Grasim soared 4.98% (Rs 52) to Rs 1,101. ACC was up 3.42% (Rs 8) at Rs 245. Gujarat Ambuja ended with a gain of 1% (Rs 3) at Rs 287.

Ranbaxy jumped 1.95% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,008. Cipla added 2% (Rs 5) to Rs 239, Dr. Reddy's ended marginally higher at Rs 799.

Infosys advanced 1.50% (Rs 78) to Rs 5,287. While Satyam ended a tad higher at Rs 314, Wipro closed down a notch at Rs 1,527.

Hindalco registered 3.34% gains (Rs 30) to Rs 935. Reliance Energy moved up 1.72% (Rs 8) to Rs 494. Zee spurted 3.32% (Rs 4) to Rs 132.

ICICI Bank (up Rs 6 or 2.67%), Tata Power (up Rs 3 to Rs 265) and Tisco (up Rs 6 or 2% to Rs 302) ended with decent gains.

HDFC, however, shed 3.41% (Rs 20) to close at Rs 559.
