Sensex drops 74 points at close

The Sensex on Thursday ended lower by 74 points after early volatility prompted by the end of political drama with the selection of Manmohan Singh as the next prime minister.

The Sensex closed at 4,932. The Nifty also ended weak at 1,544 - down 24 points.

Reliance dropped 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 443. ITC (down Rs 5 to Rs 894) ended on a subdued note. HLL, however, was up nearly 2% (Rs 3) at Rs 137.

ONGC dipped 2.71% (Rs 19) to Rs 683. SBI ended 2% lower (Rs 11) at Rs 515. While BHEL dropped 7.74% (Rs 39) to Rs 463, HPCL was down a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 323. MTNL, however, ended marginally higher at Rs 126.

Wipro shed 3.18% (Rs 48) to Rs 1,475. While Infosys lost 1.12% (Rs 56) to Rs 4,926, Satyam lost 2.80% (Rs 9) to Rs 304.

Grasim slumped 3.24% (Rs 34) to Rs 1,027. While Gujarat Ambuja shed 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 292, ACC was down 1.43% (Rs 4) at Rs 255.

Hero Honda added 1.91% (Rs 8) to Rs 450. While Maruti moved up 1.29% (Rs 6) to Rs 472, Tata Motors was up a rupee at Rs 422. Bajaj was down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 865.

HDFC dropped 5.36% (Rs 32) to Rs 558. While Reliance Energy plunged 7.56% (Rs 43) to Rs 525, Bharti lost 2.84% (Rs 4) to Rs 151. Zee slipped 2.55% (Rs 3) to Rs 122.

Tisco, however, gained 1.73% (Rs 5) to Rs 321.

Dr. Reddy's dipped 1.84% (Rs 16) to Rs 869. While Ranbaxy also ended weaker by a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 997, Cipla ended in the green at Rs 247.
