The Sensex opened firm with a positive gap of 24 points at 5,868. The markets remained buoyant in the opening session as the index touched an intra-day high of 5,903.
The afternoon trades saw the markets decline from its early highs, as profit-taking in most of the sectors dragged the index below the 5,900-mark to an intra-day low of 5,843.
The Sensex finally wrapped up the day's proceedings with a gain of 19 points at 5,863.
The Nifty settled with a gain of seven points at 1,869.
Tech majors had a decent outing on Friday. Wipro ended with a gain of 1.68% (Rs 27) at Rs 1,624.
Infosys, which rose to a high of Rs 5,469 during the intra-day trades, shed some gains on profit-taking to end up a per cent (Rs 58) at Rs 5,392.
Satyam jumped 2.15% (Rs 7) to close at Rs 334.
Media major Zee shot up 7.84% (Rs 10) to close at Rs 142.
Select PSU and heavyweights ended at higher levels. MTNL attracted considerable buying support today, and flared up 4.26% (Rs 6) to Rs 152. BHEL and SBI ended with marginal gains at Rs 643 (up Rs 3) and Rs 639 (up Rs 2), respectively. HPCL, however, finished down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 510.
HLL ended with a rupee gain at Rs 152. While Reliance closed up a tad at Rs 566, ITC ended flat at Rs 1,087.
Cement, pharma and auto pivotals had a mixed outing. Grasim added 1.21% (Rs 14) to Rs 1,187. While ACC moved up 1.68% (Rs 5) to Rs 279, Gujarat Ambuja closed up a tad at Rs 330. L&T, however, slipped from higher levels to end down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 606.
Ranbaxy moved up 1.59% (Rs 16) to Rs 1,036. Dr. Reddy's ended off-highs with a gain of Rs 7 at Rs 907. Cipla, however, was down a rupee at Rs 1,223.
Bajaj finished 2.61% higher (Rs 24) at Rs 930. Hero Honda ended with a loss of 1.10% (Rs 6) at Rs 497. Tata Motors also ended weak at Rs 509 - down Rs 2.
Reliance Energy ended up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 776 on the BSE.
Hindalco (up Rs 5 to Rs 1,297) and Tisco (up Rs 2 to Rs 396) ended with gains
HDFC, however, lost 2.68% (Rs 18) to Rs 638. While HDFC Bank was down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 378, ONGC also ended weak at Rs 868 - down Rs 4.
