Sensex surges 140 points at close

The Sensex, which opened with a gain of 24 points at 5,810, displayed bullish trend through the session. After moving with decent gains till early noon deals, the markets gained momentum towards the closing hours, as buying spree in heavyweights, PSUs, tech, cement and auto counters triggered the broad-based rally, which saw the index zoom past the 5,900 mark to touch a high of 5,936.

The Sensex ended the session with a gain of 140 points at 5,926.

The Nifty surged 47 points to close at 1,881.

Reliance advanced 2.57% (Rs 15) to Rs 589. While ITC closed up a per cent (Rs 11) at Rs 996, HLL gained nearly 2% (Rs 4) to Rs 193.

SBI attracted considerable buying support, and perked up 4.57% (Rs 27) to Rs 624. BHEL flared up 4.38% (Rs 25) to Rs 588. While HPCL jumped 3.32% (Rs 15) to Rs 464, MTNL logged 3% gains (Rs 4) to Rs 137.

Hindalco at Rs 1,296 (up Rs 86 or 7.15%), BSES at Rs 611 (up Rs 32 or 5.48%), ONGC at Rs 745 (up Rs 8 or 1.15%), HDFC at Rs 659 (up Rs 13 or 2%), HDFC Bank at Rs 364 (up Rs 11 or 3.19%) and ICICI Bank at Rs 333 (up Rs 11 or 3.30%) witnessed relentless buying support.

Tisco gained 2.30% (Rs 9) to Rs 423. Tata Power spurted 3.69% (Rs 14) to Rs 390. Zee mopped up 5.46% gains (Rs 8) to Rs 153.

Infosys moved up 1.43% (Rs 80) to Rs 5,656. Wipro (up Rs 75 or 4.80% to Rs 1,631) and Satyam (up Rs 9 or 2.87% to Rs 328) ended with steep gains.

Grasim shot up 3.36% (Rs 36) to Rs 1,116. ACC rose 4.17% (Rs 11) to close at Rs 267. While L&T moved up 1.33% (Rs 7) to Rs 504, Gujarat Ambuja was up 1.71% (Rs 5) at Rs 303.

Hero Honda raked in 4.25% gains (Rs 20) to Rs 484. While Tata Motors advanced 1.72% (Rs 9) to Rs 541, Bajaj ended with a modest gain of 1% (Rs 7) at Rs 1,032.

Ranbaxy edged higher by 2.49% (Rs 24) to Rs 974. Cipla was up 1.50% (Rs 17) at Rs 1,162. Dr. Reddy's, however, displayed weak trends through the session, and tanked 6.11% (Rs 81) to Rs 1,251.

Bharti Tele was amongst the few stocks which ended weak, and the counter lost 1.54% (Rs 2) at Rs 137.
