Sensex regains 15K; IT index soars

The Sensex, after last weeks 9% rally, opened up 109 points at 14,854, on the back of positive cues from the global markets. The index thereafter surged to a high of 15,209 - up 464 points.

The Sensex finally ended near the day's high, at 15,191 - up 446 points. In the process, the index has regained the 15,000 mark after over a month.

The BSE-IT index soared after IT major, TCS, announced its Q1 numbers. The index gained 7% at 3,759. The realty index was up nearly 5%.

The market breadth was fairly positive. Out of 2,741 stocks traded 1,837 advanced while 832 declined.

Index movers...

TCS zoomed 15% to Rs 500, after announcing a 19% jump in Q1 net. Other IT majors, Wipro and Infosys also soared. Wipro rallied 7% to Rs 460, ahead of its results. Infosys surged 5.5% to Rs 1,973.

ICICI Bank gained 6% at Rs 787. DLF, Hindalco, Reliance and Jaiprakash Associates added around 5% each.

ACC, Sterlite, Tata Motors, SBI, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Grasim, BHEL, Maruti Suzuki and ONGC moved up 2-4% each.

ITC shed 2% at Rs 225. Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Communications dropped over 1% each.

Value and volume toppers

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 266.9 crore. It was followed by TCS (Rs 194.86 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 194.64 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 191.97 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 173.91 crore).

The volume chart was led by Reliance Natural Resources with trades of over 17.29 million shares, followed by Ispat Industries (16.13 million), Suzlon (13.84 million), IFCI (11.76 million) and Unitech (11.73 million).
