Sensex ends near day's high

The Indian bourses broke the rangebound session and soared to a high of 17,237, up 274 points from the day's low.

The Sensex finally ended at 17,227, up 244 points. The NSE Nifty is at 5,148, up 82 points.

INDEX MOVERS...

Bharti Airtel was the major gainer on the BSE, up 4%  at Rs 329. It was followed by DLF ,up 3.5% at Rs 382.

Tata Motors, Hindalco, Reliance, Jaiprakash Associates, Reliance Communications and Tata Steel advanced 2-3% each at Rs 723, Rs 146, Rs 1,080, Rs 231, Rs 180 and Rs 568, respectively.

The prominent gainers were HDFC Bank, Wipro, HUL, NTPC, Sterlite and Tata Power, up 1-2% each.

...AND THE SHAKERS

SBI and Maruti Suzuki declined below 1% each at Rs 2,307 and Rs 1,569, respectively.
