India will be able to meet over 91 per cent of its electricity requirement by the end of the current financial year, Power Minister P M Sayeed said on Wednesday.
"The quantum of electricity required in the country by the end of 2005-06 is estimated to be 613 billion units. Against this requirement, 559.1 billion units of energy is likely to be made available from the units so far commissioned," he said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
In addition, 22.9 billion units of energy is likely to be made available through generation by new projects to be commissioned/stabilised during the year.
Sayeed said the per capita electricity consumption in the country was 592 kilowatt hours during 2003-04, much lower than Australia (10,502 kilowatt hours), France (7,366 kwh), Germany (6,742 kwh), Russia (5,350 kwh), the United (6,158 kwh) and the United States (13,228 kwh).
Planning Commission, he said, has allocated an outlay of Rs 2,70,276.36 crore (Rs 2,702.763 billion) in the Tenth Plan for power sector comprising Rs 1,77,050.64 crore (Rs Rs 1,770.506 billion) for Central sector and Rs 93,225.72 crore (Rs 932.257 billion) for the state sector.
A capacity addition target of 41,110 megawatt has been envisaged comprising 22,832 MW in central sector, 11,157 MW in state sector and 7,121 MW in the private sector, he said.
