5 things you want to know about Hyundai i20 Active Crossover

February 28, 2015 10:48 IST

We have already talked about the i20 based crossover from Hyundai whose spied images have leaked in the past.

But now the company has officially released sketches of the new SUV lookalike i20 Active crossover.

With the launch of this much anticipated crossover coming near, Hyundai has started to be a lot more up close regarding the design.

From the sketches, the design looks quite aggressive and muscular which makes sense since the competition which the vehicle would be going up against includes the likes of Fiat Avventura, Volkswagen Cross Polo and Toyota Etios Cross.

The Hyundai i20 Active was designed in Russelsheim, Germany at Hyundai Motor Design Centre Europe. The company has also made it official that the crossover would be launched in the Indian market in March, 2015 which is not too far away from now.

So let’s look at what we can expect from the upcoming cross from Hyundai.

Looks

One of the most notable feature of the car in terms of aesthetics includes skid plates and backside cladding whereas the rear end garners the same taillamp that Elite i20 has with freshly constructed fog lamps and reverse gear light.

Other features that Hyundai i20 Active would get includes projector headlamps, LED DRLs, roof rails, roof spoiler and 17 inch alloy wheels.

There is not much to talk about in the interior department but one can expect a lot more spacious cabin for which makes sense since it is a crossover offering a seating capacity of 5 with a respectable 295 litres boot space.

For entertainment, there is going to be an infotainment system that would incorporate music system, tweeters, mp3 playback, CD player, Bluetooth, FM radio and even it could navigation functionality as well.

Engine

As far as specifications are concerned, Hyundai i20 Active would feature almost the same specs as Elite i20 hatch.

For the petrol variant, Hyundai i20 Active would garner a 1.2 litre Dual VTVT Kappa petrol engine that would give away power output of 82bhp along with maximum torque of 115Nm. For the diesel trim, Hyundai i20 Active may run on a 1.4 litre U2 CRDi engine chucking out 89bhp power and peak torque of 220Nm.

Mileage

There is no official info on what the fuel economy is going to be with Hyundai i20 Active, but we can get an idea through what Hyundai Elite i20 delivers and what its competition is delivering.

Hyundai i20 Elite gives a mileage of 18.4kmpl in cities and 22.54kmpl on highways but a crossover may not be able to deliver such numbers being a lot heavier.

Also with cross like Fiat Avventura giving 11.2 kmpl in cities and 14.4kmpl on highways, we can expect Hyundai i20 Active to deliver marginally better figures.

Safety

Some of the most conventional safety features like Anti-lock braking system, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, airbags, engine immobilizer and central locking, etc. would be making their way into Hyundai i20 Active along with facilities like low fuel warning, door ajar warning, gear shift indicator.

Price

At the moment, we can expect Hyundai i20 Active to be priced around Rs. 7.5 lac to Rs. 8.5 lac which is pretty much the same price range as of Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen Cross-Polo.

So the company is making its intentions clear in order to compete against the best crossovers in the country.

So overall Hyundai i20 Active looks quite competitive and would give Volkswagen, Toyota and Fiat a run for their money for their respective crossovers.
