State-owned oil companies have given a New Year jolt to consumers by raising the prices of petrol and diesel by Re 1 per litre each, effective from Wednesday midnight.

Petrol would become dearer by Re 1 at Rs 33.70 per litre in Delhi, while diesel prices go up by Re1 to Rs 21.73 per litre, official sources said.

The prices of petrol and diesel had last been raised on December 15.

In Mumbai, petrol prices would go up by Re 1 a litre at Rs 38.74 as against the current price of Rs 37.74 per litre, while diesel would cost Rs 27.23 against Rs 26.23 per litre.

In Kolkata, petrol would cost Rs 36.57 per litre as against the current price of 35.57 and diesel would cost Rs 23.94 a litre.

In Chennai, petrol price would be Rs 36.71 per litre as against Rs 35.71 a litre, while diesel would cost Rs 24.11 a litre as against the prevailing Rs 23.11 per litre.

The pricing committee of the four public sector marketing companies -- Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and IBP -- is of the view that the spurt in the international prices of both diesel and petrol in the past fortnight, there is a case for increasing the domestic prices of the two automobile fuels.
