Personal computer sales crossed 9.21 lakh units in the third quarter of 2004-05, showing a growth of 14 per cent year-on-year and the fiscal is expected to end with 40 lakh units.

"The desktop PC market grossed over 9.21 lakh units. This is a sequential growth of 12 per cent over the second quarter. With the demand remaining robust the PC market is expected to grow to four million units in 2004-05," IT hardware industry body MAIT said.

The assembled PCs segment suffered an erosion in their market share due to aggressive pricing strategy by the organized sector at 43 per cent in Oct-Dec of 04-05 from 55 per cent in the same period a year ago.

Indian brands accounted for 23 per cent of the market while the MNC brands accounted for the rest 34 per cent.

"The buoyancy in PC sales can be attributed to increased consumption by traditional Industry verticals such as telecom, banking, financial services & insurance, IT-enabled services, manufacturing and the government," MAIT said.

Consumption also picked up in non-traditional sectors like education, retail outlets and self-employed professionals.

Notebook market in Q3 witnessed a 47 per cent growth over the previous quarter to touch 64,707 units. This was led by drop in notebook prices.
