The Indian PC market, including desktops, notebooks and servers, grew by 34.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2004 while the country garnered 9.23 per cent share in the Asia Pacific region, IT analyst firm Gartner said on Thursday.

The total shipments from India were more than 760,000 units, a Gartner release said in Mumbai.

Desktops registered 32 per cent growth while notebooks grew steadily at 123 per cent and constituted 5 per cent of total shipments during the quarter, the release said.

Hewlett-Packard maintained top position with 14.9 per cent market share (9.1 per cent in the second quarter of last fiscal) followed by HCL with 11.9 per cent (8.8 per cent) while IBM increased its share to 7.8 per cent (6.6 per cent).

"The election period and expectation of further reduction in prices due to the budget caused a marginal halt in desktop purchases by consumers during the last two weeks of June but did not impact the overall upward trend in purchases," Gartner analyst (computing systems), Vinod Nair said.

Narrowing price differential between desktops and notebooks has catalysed notebook purchases of the latter within the small and medium business segment, it said.

Asia Pacific PC market shipments in the second quarter of 2004 increased by 16.5 per cent compared to a year ago period, with China, India and Thailand accounting for 60 per cent of shipments from the region.
